I finally gave in to this book. I've had it for I don't know how long in my library, and regularly someone would tell me about it and say it was good. Without much enthusiasm, more like a statement: \"Yes, indeed, it's a good book. You can read it, you probably won't get bored.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the back cover, some big names (one from the French Academy, the other from the Goncourt Academy) managed to excite me a bit more. Bernard Pivot, especially:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nIf you stick your nose into this big novel, you're screwed. You won't be able to stop yourself from running to the six hundredth page. You will be manipulated, baffled, flabbergasted, annoyed, fascinated by a story with multiple twists and turns, false leads and coups de th\u00e9\u00e2tre.<\/p>\nBernard Pivot, of the Acad\u00e9mie Goncourt, Le Journal du Dimanche<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And I pretty much agree. It's definitely a page-turner, and I was indeed baffled and flabbergasted. Manipulated, okay, to a certain extent. Passionate, one might say. But mostly...<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Annoyed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
That I was. Quite a bit. Of course, mostly because the dead little girl was 15 and \"had a love affair\" with a guy in his 30s. A guy who, decades later, still thinks he was in love with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, you may know that this kind of talk can't convince me anymore. For me, it's over. A man who is seduced by a teenage girl who may have boobs but still talks like a kid, flirts with adults on the street, and is so awed by the fact that he's a writer is NOT CUTE. Period. And the book really doesn't emphasize that enough, on the contrary. The narrator ends up convinced that this man actually loved the girl. After all, you don't choose who you love, love is ageless, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Annoyed, also, because I didn't like the characters. Marcus Goldman sounded rather like a douchebag, I obviously didn't like the old man, Nola (the 15 year old daughter) is downright daft, and the others are either a bit mean or just plain insignificant. What kept me going with the story was not my interest in the murder, but the way the book was written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And finally, annoyed by the end. Because the murderer, whom we finally discover after too many false leads to shock us anymore, was another older man, a borderline pedophile, who was fancying Nola, and I had already had enough of one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ah, and the name. Quebert. Can someone explain to me how to pronounce it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passionn\u00e9e, on va dire. Mais surtout… Agac\u00e9e \u00c7a, je l’ai \u00e9t\u00e9. Pas mal. \u00c9videmment, surtout parce que la petite fille morte avait 15 ans et qu’elle “avait une histoire d’amour” avec un gars dans la trentaine. Gars qui, des dizaines d’ann\u00e9es plus tard, continue \u00e0 penser qu’il \u00e9tait amoureux d’elle. Alors, vous savez peut-\u00eatre que ce genre de discours ne peut plus me convaincre. Pour moi, c’est termin\u00e9. Un monsieur qui est s\u00e9duit par une adolescente qui a certes des seins mais qui parle encore comme un enfant, qui flirte avec des adultes dans la rue et qui est donc impressionn\u00e9e par le fait qu’il est \u00e9crivain, ce n’est PAS CUTE. Point barre. Et le livre ne fait vraiment pas assez l’accent sur \u00e7a, au contraire. Le narrateur finit convaincu que cet homme aimait r\u00e9ellement la jeune fille. Apr\u00e8s tout, on ne choisit pas qui on aime, l’amour n’a pas d’\u00e2ge, etc. Agac\u00e9e, ensuite, parce que je n’aimais pas les personnages. Marcus Goldman avait plut\u00f4t l’air d’un douchebag, le vieux \u00e9videmment ne me plaisait pas, Nola (la fille de 15 ans) est franchement nounoune, et les autres sont soit un peu m\u00e9chants soit tout simplement insignifiants. Ce qui me poussait \u00e0 continuer l’histoire n’\u00e9tait pas mon int\u00e9r\u00eat pour le meurtre, mais la fa\u00e7on dont le livre \u00e9tait \u00e9crit. Et finalement, par la fin. Parce que le meurtrier, qu’on d\u00e9couvre finalement apr\u00e8s beaucoup trop de fausses pistes pour encore nous choquer, \u00e9tait un autre homme plus \u00e2g\u00e9 limite p\u00e9dophile qui trippait sur Nola, et que j’en avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 bien assez d’un. Ah, et le nom. Quebert. Quelqu’un peut m’expliquer comment on prononce \u00e7a? Bref, pas s\u00fbre que je vous le conseille.
