Compared to the others, it seemed rather short. But not because I was swept up in my reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The relationship between Marcel and his girlfriend, Albertine, has gone to another level. She is now living with him in the apartment of Marcel's parents, who are away for quite some time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since <em>Sodom and Gomorrah<\/em>, we know, or at least we guess, that Albertine has a certain taste for women. Marcel suspects that she has dissolute morals, as they used to say at the time, and this drives him crazy. His rather fragile \"love\" is constantly revived by his bouts of jealousy: just as he decides to leave her, a new lie, an oblique glance that is a little too insistent, and the arrival in town of a young woman with a bad reputation make him go back to her. And now that she is at home and he feels more justified in trying to control her, he engages in all sorts of shenanigans to prevent her from indulging her unchaste desires. He has her followed, he makes up misfortunes so that she will come to console him instead of going to such and such an event, he uses his social connections to make sure she doesn't talk to such and such a person, etc. A healthy relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Impressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I realize that I only liked the narrator for a brief moment. That was when he was a child, in the first volume. After that, he became a hormone-filled teenager, then a pretentious young adult with questionable values, and finally a jealous and possessive adult. He writes really well, that's undeniable (if you consider that the author and the narrator are the same person). But getting attached to the character is important, and right now I'm finding it difficult. Not only did he behave like a dangerous man, but he also blithely commented on Charlus's homosexuality and spoke of women as an exotic species with limited faculties. He can provide a treasure trove of nuance and detail about the texture of an air at a certain time or the light that falls on his street, but when it comes to talking about homosexuals or women, he is far from standing out from the crowd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I must say that I enjoyed some of the passages that described jealousy. He was able to hit the nail on the head as he does on many subjects. His descriptions of places and the smallest details that go unnoticed by the average person are absolutely beautiful. But in the end, nothing new for readers who started his work from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find it surprising that there is nothing else to tell but the main plot. Maybe, indeed, this tome was shorter. Elle vit maintenant avec lui, dans l&#8217;appartement des parents de Marcel, qui sont absents pour une assez longue p\u00e9riode de temps. Depuis Sodome et Gomorrhe, on sait, ou du moins on devine, qu&#8217;Albertine a un certain go\u00fbt pour les femmes. Marcel soup\u00e7onne qu&#8217;elle a des moeurs dissolues, comme on disait \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9poque, et \u00e7a le rend fou. Son \u00abamour\u00bb plut\u00f4t fragile ne cesse de se raviver au rythme de ses acc\u00e8s de jalousie : alors qu&#8217;il se d\u00e9cide \u00e0 la quitter, un nouveau mensonge, un regard oblique un peu trop insistant, l&#8217;arriv\u00e9e en ville d&#8217;une jeune femme de mauvaise r\u00e9putation le font se rattacher \u00e0 elle. Et maintenant qu&#8217;elle est chez lui et qu&#8217;il se sent plus justifi\u00e9 de tenter de la contr\u00f4ler, il se livre \u00e0 toutes sortes de manigances pour l&#8217;emp\u00eacher d&#8217;assouvir ses d\u00e9sirs non catholiques. Il la fait suivre, il invente des malheurs pour qu&#8217;elle vienne le consoler plut\u00f4t que d&#8217;aller \u00e0 tel \u00e9v\u00e9nement, il utilise ses relations mondaines pour s&#8217;assurer qu&#8217;elle ne parle pas \u00e0 telle personne, etc. Une relation saine, quoi. Impressions Je me rends que je n&#8217;ai aim\u00e9 le narrateur que pour un bref instant. C&#8217;\u00e9tait quand il \u00e9tait enfant, dans le premier tome. Apr\u00e8s, il est devenu un ado bourr\u00e9 d&#8217;hormones, puis un jeune adulte pr\u00e9tentieux aux valeurs discutables, et enfin un adulte jaloux et possessif. Il \u00e9crit vraiment bien, c&#8217;est ind\u00e9niable (si on consid\u00e8re que l&#8217;auteur et le narrateur sont la m\u00eame personne). Mais s&#8217;attacher au personnage, c&#8217;est important, et en ce moment je trouve \u00e7a difficile. Non seulement il adoptait le comportement d&#8217;un homme dangereux, mais en plus il commentait all\u00e8grement l&#8217;homosexualit\u00e9 de Charlus et parlait de la femme comme d&#8217;une esp\u00e8ce exotique aux facult\u00e9s r\u00e9duites. Il peut fournir un tr\u00e9sor de nuances et de d\u00e9tails sur la texture d&#8217;un air \u00e0 une certaine heure ou sur la lumi\u00e8re qui tombe sur sa rue, mais quand vient le temps de parler des homosexuels ou des femmes, il est loin de se distinguer de la masse. Je dois dire que j&#8217;ai appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 certains passages qui d\u00e9crivaient la jalousie. Il a pu viser dans le mille comme il sait le faire sur bien des sujets. Ses descriptions des lieux et des moindres d\u00e9tails qui passent inaper\u00e7us pour le commun des mortels sont absolument magnifiques. Mais en fin de compte, rien de nouveau pour les lecteurs qui ont commenc\u00e9 son oeuvre du d\u00e9but. Je trouve surprenant de n&#8217;avoir rien d&#8217;autre \u00e0 raconter que l&#8217;intrigue principale. Peut-\u00eatre, effectivement, ce tome-ci \u00e9tait plus court.
