This is a big one to swallow. There are few Quebec books I've heard so much about, and yet I never understood what it was about. It was when I noticed that all of my literature professors had mentioned R\u00e9jean Ducharme with deference at least once that I finally decided to check another item off my list of classics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berenice Einberg was born into a dysfunctional family. Her Jewish father and Christian mother want to tear each other's heads off at every word and affection at home is almost non-existent. They separated the two children: Berenice is Jewish like her father, her brother Christian is Christian like her mother. And rather than eternally seeking the approval of her parents, Berenice of her parents, Berenice has the intelligence to rebel. She openly confronts her parents and claims complete autonomy of thought:\nshe will always be free, no matter what happens to her body. Any attempt to control her to control her is useless. Her life is her own. But this defense mechanism is not without consequences...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impressions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title gave me the impression that the book was poetic, cute, full of pretty phrases that you could glean like flowers while smiling at the brilliant wordplay. It's funny how much I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The narrator is a child, but nothing in the book is childish. Berenice's mind teems with a strange hatred for such a little girl. Her love is rare, focused, and if it is not reciprocated in every way, she feels betrayed to the core of her heart. Her vocabulary is not that of a little girl, the words are too complex, they are words that I had never read in my life, but you can still feel the restless child who is talking behind. In this book, the oral is intimately linked to the literary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike many traditional female characters, Berenice's body is only a shell. She describes it as she would describe that of an animal. One feels it dirty. She crawls in the mud, in the sand, the elements penetrate her and reflect her emotions that could... swallow everything. Like a wave that would swallow everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could be that all the elements of the setting are only projections of Berenice's mind. I imagine the place where she lives as a medieval castle, all in stone, cold and lit only by torches that cast gloomy shadows. The surrounding landscape is bare, desolate, dry or drowned, with no in-between. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death is omnipresent. Berenice plays with death. She is insanely strong in the face of it. It's hard to say if we can speak of courage, because she is not afraid, and there is no courage without fear. In fact, she has little emotion. One senses in her a murderer in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says she is hated, but it is hard to see tangible evidence of a lack of love elsewhere than in her father, and ironically he is the family member who is mentioned the least. The target of her hatred is her mother, her beautiful, loving mother, who constantly seeks her daughter's love, who watches over her when she is sick, who apologizes for her mood swings, who seems so vulnerable. We have front row access to Berenice's mind, and yet it remains and yet it remains impenetrable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did I like Swallowed<\/em>? Short answer: no. Even if it is of a stunning originality. The problem is that you get used to it. Soon, there is nothing endearing about Berenice Einberg, I only saw her mental illness, her scary side, her destructive madness. When she kills her mother's cat and shortly afterwards discovers that the gardener has committed suicide, all of this in total indifference, I was left with nothing but disgust. She is frightening, she dreams of murder and destruction, one would like to imprison her. The beautiful sentences turn into delirium. One detaches oneself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left the book certainly edified, happy as every time one finishes a great book, but also a little drained, my heart a little shaken, with a little nausea. My respect remains immense. C’est un gros morceau \u00e0 avaler. Il y a peu de livres qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois dont j’ai entendu autant parler, et pourtant jamais je n’avais compris quel en \u00e9tait le sujet. C’est quand j\u2019ai remarqu\u00e9 que tous mes professeurs de litt\u00e9rature avaient mentionn\u00e9 R\u00e9jean Ducharme avec d\u00e9f\u00e9rence au moins une fois que je me suis finalement d\u00e9cid\u00e9e \u00e0 cocher un autre \u00e9l\u00e9ment dans ma liste de classiques. R\u00e9sum\u00e9 B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Einberg est n\u00e9e dans une famille dysfonctionnelle. Son p\u00e8re juif et sa m\u00e8re chr\u00e9tienne veulent s\u2019arracher la t\u00eate \u00e0 chaque deux mots et l\u2019affection \u00e0 la maison est quasi inexistante. Ils se sont s\u00e9par\u00e9 les deux enfants : B\u00e9r\u00e9nice est juive comme son p\u00e8re, son fr\u00e8re Christian est chr\u00e9tien comme sa m\u00e8re. Et plut\u00f4t que de rechercher \u00e9ternellement l\u2019approbation de ses parents, B\u00e9r\u00e9nice a l\u2019intelligence de se r\u00e9volter. Elle confronte ouvertement ses parents et revendique l\u2019autonomie compl\u00e8te de ses pens\u00e9es : elle sera toujours libre, peu importe ce qui arrive \u00e0 son corps. Toute tentative de la contr\u00f4ler est inutile. Sa vie lui appartient. Mais ce m\u00e9canisme de d\u00e9fense n\u2019est pas sans cons\u00e9quence\u2026 Impressions Le titre me donnait l\u2019impression que le livre \u00e9tait po\u00e9tique, mignon, plein de jolies phrases qu\u2019on pouvait glaner comme des fleurs en souriant des brillants jeux de mots. C\u2019est dr\u00f4le \u00e0 quel point j’\u00e9tais dans le champ. La narratrice est un enfant, mais rien n\u2019est enfantin dans le livre. L\u2019esprit de B\u00e9r\u00e9nice grouille d\u2019une haine \u00e9trange pour une si petite fille. Son amour est rare, cibl\u00e9, et s\u2019il n\u2019est pas r\u00e9ciproque en tous points, elle se sent trahie jusqu\u2019au plus profond de son c\u0153ur. Son vocabulaire n\u2019est pas celui d\u2019une petite fille, les mots sont trop complexes, ce sont des mots que je n\u2019avais jamais lus de ma vie, mais on sent quand m\u00eame l\u2019enfant agit\u00e9 qui parle derri\u00e8re. Dans ce livre, l\u2019oral est intimement li\u00e9 au litt\u00e9raire. Contrairement \u00e0 celui de bien des personnages f\u00e9minins traditionnels, le corps de B\u00e9r\u00e9nice n\u2019est qu\u2019une enveloppe. Elle le d\u00e9crit comme elle d\u00e9crirait celui d\u2019une b\u00eate. On le sent sale. Elle rampe dans la boue, dans le sable, les \u00e9l\u00e9ments la p\u00e9n\u00e8trent et refl\u00e8tent ses \u00e9motions qui pourraient\u2026 tout avaler. Comme une vague qui avalerait tout. Il se pourrait que tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments du d\u00e9cor ne soient que des projections de l\u2019esprit de B\u00e9r\u00e9nice. J\u2019imagine l’endroit o\u00f9 elle vit comme un ch\u00e2teau m\u00e9di\u00e9val, tout en pierre, froid et \u00e9clair\u00e9 seulement par des torches qui projettent des ombres lugubres. Le paysage alentour est nu, d\u00e9sol\u00e9, sec ou noy\u00e9, sans entre-deux. La mort est omnipr\u00e9sente. B\u00e9r\u00e9nice joue avec la mort. Elle est follement forte face \u00e0 elle. Difficile \u00e0 dire si on peut parler de courage, car elle n\u2019a pas peur, et il n\u2019y a pas de courage sans peur. En fait, elle n\u2019a que peu d\u2019\u00e9motions. On sent chez elle une meurtri\u00e8re en devenir. Elle se dit d\u00e9test\u00e9e, mais on voit mal les preuves tangibles d\u2019un manque d\u2019amour ailleurs que chez son p\u00e8re, et ironiquement c\u2019est le membre de la famille dont il est le moins fait mention. La cible de sa haine, c\u2019est sa m\u00e8re, sa m\u00e8re pourtant belle, aimante, qui cherche sans cesse l\u2019amour de sa fille, qui la veille quand elle est malade, qui s\u2019excuse de ses sautes d\u2019humeur, qui semble si vuln\u00e9rable. On a acc\u00e8s \u00e0 l\u2019esprit de B\u00e9r\u00e9nice aux premi\u00e8res loges, et pourtant il reste imp\u00e9n\u00e9trable. Est-ce que j\u2019ai aim\u00e9 L\u2019aval\u00e9e des aval\u00e9s? R\u00e9ponse courte : non. M\u00eame s\u2019il est d\u2019une originalit\u00e9 foudroyante. Le probl\u00e8me, c\u2019est qu\u2019on s\u2019habitue. Rapidement, il n\u2019y a plus rien d\u2019attachant chez B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Einberg, je n\u2019ai plus vu que la maladie mentale, son c\u00f4t\u00e9 effrayant, sa folie destructrice. Au moment o\u00f9 elle tue le chat de sa m\u00e8re et qu’elle d\u00e9couvre peu apr\u00e8s le jardinier suicid\u00e9, le tout dans l’indiff\u00e9rence totale, il ne m’est plus rest\u00e9 que du d\u00e9go\u00fbt. Elle fait peur, elle r\u00eave de meurtre et de destruction, on voudrait l\u2019emprisonner. Les belles phrases virent en d\u00e9lire. On se d\u00e9tache. Je suis sortie du livre certes \u00e9difi\u00e9e, contente comme \u00e0 chaque fois qu\u2019on a termin\u00e9 un grand livre, mais aussi un peu vid\u00e9e, le c\u0153ur un peu chamboul\u00e9, avec un peu de naus\u00e9e. Mon respect reste tout de m\u00eame immense. R\u00e9jean Ducharme l’a \u00e9crit quand il avait mon \u00e2ge.
