At the end of an overly busy year, I was in desperate need of an escape. My friend Chantal lent me this small, but rather dense, exotic novel. Goal achieved.<\/em><\/p>\n

Pierre Loti, originally Julien Viaud, was a phenomenal lady-killer. A large part of his novels, and there are many of them<\/a>is inspired by his affairs. But that of Aziyad\u00e9 was the most striking. A beautiful woman from a Turkish harem, she has piercing eyes, thick curly hair, and a charming candor. She is bored all day long in a brothel, and knows nothing about life. The strange Westerner who comes to see her every night, at the risk of his head (and his virility), to whisper words of love to her that she does not understand, fascinates her. They escape every night, on the sea or on the land, to spend a few feverish hours together.<\/p>\n

A strangely passionate love story. They fall in love even though they cannot exchange a word, because Loti does not yet speak the language.\u00a0The latter, moreover, does not know himself why he takes so many risks for this woman: he is only \"almost\" in love. Indeed, he cannot do more. He is painfully melancholic, has an insatiable thirst for adventure and sex, and rejects women and their hearts without much remorse, like old socks. This novel is the episode of his life spent in Istambul, Turkey, of which he is so enchanted that he thinks of spending the rest of his life there.<\/p>\n

But this unsympathetic narrator has an incredible writing, and we forgive him. He talks about landscapes as if they had a soul, mixes delicious Arabic words into his text, and creates for us colorful images, warmth, sounds and smells from abroad. A real pleasure to read aloud. The words sing, we take ourselves for a poet.<\/p>\n

Also, get ready to take out your dictionary: your mental images will be all the more magical.<\/p>\n

It was so colorful and bizarre, that it looked less like a reality than a fantastic composition of some hallucinated orientalist (p. 41).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Elle s’ennuie \u00e0 la journ\u00e9e longue dans une maison close, et ne conna\u00eet rien \u00e0 la vie. Le dr\u00f4le d’Occidental qui vient alors la voir toutes les nuits, au p\u00e9ril de sa t\u00eate (et de sa virilit\u00e9), pour lui chuchoter des mots d’amour qu’elle ne comprend pas, la fascine. Ils s’\u00e9vadent chaque nuit, sur la mer ou sur la terre, pour passer quelques heures fi\u00e9vreuses ensemble. Histoire d’amour \u00e9trangement passionn\u00e9e. Ils tombent amoureux alors qu’ils ne peuvent s’\u00e9changer un mot, car Loti ne parle pas encore la langue.\u00a0Celui-ci, d’ailleurs, ne sait pas lui-m\u00eame\u00a0pourquoi il prend tant de risques pour cette femme : il n’est que “presque” amoureux. En effet, il ne peut faire plus. Il est d’une m\u00e9lancolie harassante, a une soif d’aventure et de baiser insatiable, et rejette les femmes et leurs coeurs sans beaucoup de remords, comme de vieilles chaussettes. Ce roman, c’est l’\u00e9pisode de sa vie pass\u00e9 \u00e0 Istambul, en Turquie, dont il est si charm\u00e9 qu’il pense y passer le reste de vie. Mais ce narrateur antipathique a une plume incroyable, et on lui pardonne. Il parle des paysages comme s’ils avaient une \u00e2me, m\u00eale \u00e0 son texte des mots arabes d\u00e9licieux, et cr\u00e9e pour nous des images color\u00e9es,\u00a0une chaleur, des bruits et des odeurs \u00e9trangers. Un vrai plaisir de lire \u00e0 voix haute. Les mots chantent, on se prend pour un po\u00e8te.
