It's ironic that the Plateau Mont-Royal library is so poor, in the most hipster and trendy neighborhood of Montreal. One thing is certain when you go there: you won't find what you're looking for. But, oh miracle, I found this little novel. It was on my list, I had gleaned the review from I don't know which magazine. I had no other reason to read it, no reason to continue. But the sentences came. After one page, I was already panting. Trying to stop would have been like trying to get out of a moving car: impossible.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The writing profession is not what it used to be. Modern people are looking for immediacy, they want to interact, to share what they like, to influence the content: they want to have a relationship with what they read. So when Gary Montaigu won the International Book Prize, he decided to change the world. He's going to put his work on the screen, in a reality show: A True Writer.<\/em>\u00a0His novel will become a \"participatory novel\". Everyone will be able to see him writing, follow the progress of his novel, comment, share, \"like\" on social networks. A kind of litteraryLoft Story\u00a0<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What a great idea. Convinced to revolutionize art, Gary opened his house to camera operators 24 hours a day. It becomes a battlefield. His wife Ruth, who manages his career, starts dressing up at all hours of the day. They try to forget about the cameras and go about their normal lives. The producers convince them to add an emotional young journalist to the set to create a little sexual tension.<\/p>\n

Of course, his wife becomes a possessive and jealous monster. Her husband's success goes to her head, and she is convinced that she is the only one responsible for it. Her job is to manage her husband's career. She reads and comments on his texts over his shoulder. Their couple is nothing but hypocrisy, they wonder if they ever really loved each other.<\/p>\n

Of course, Alana, the journalist placed in the casting, falls in love with the writer. When Gary goes along and kisses her, she is convinced that he loves her. She is torn and vulnerable.<\/p>\n

And Gary goes crazy. Invaded in his head and in his vital space, he completely loses his reason to be. He plunges into a whirlwind of dark thoughts, closes himself off, writes worse and worse, until he hits rock bottom. He doesn't want to continue with the reality show, but he is trapped. The producers are after him, his wife is after him, the viewers are after him. He sees no other solution than to run too, in the street, drinking whisky, until he falls.<\/p>\n

Yes, there was a moral in this tragic book. And it is repeated again and again by Gary Montague in his descent into hell. There is no more room for deep thought, writers are no longer heard, they have to adapt to the public, new ideas cannot arise, the world is too superficial...<\/p>\n

That's not what moved me. But the twisted relationship was horribly realistic, the sense of suffocation grabbed me by the throat, all through sentences that sped by at 100 km\/h. There is simply no time to breathe. And that's what kept me hooked, until the end.<\/p>\n

As for whether it is worth going to the Plateau Mont-Royal library to find it...<\/p>\n

Alors quand Gary Montaigu gagne l’International Book Prize, il d\u00e9cide de changer le monde. Mais la relation de couple tordue \u00e9tait horriblement\u00a0r\u00e9aliste, le sentiment d’\u00e9touffement\u00a0m’a pris \u00e0 la gorge, tout \u00e7a \u00e0 travers des phrases qui filaient \u00e0 100 km\/h. On n’a tout simplement pas le temps de respirer. Et c’est ce qui m’a tenue accroch\u00e9e, jusqu’\u00e0 la fin. Il \u00e9tait dans ma liste, j’avais glan\u00e9 la critique dans je ne sais plus quel magazine. Je n’avais pas d’autre raison de le lire, aucune raison de continuer. Mais les phrases ont d\u00e9boul\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s une page, je haletais d\u00e9j\u00e0. Essayer d’arr\u00eater, \u00e7’aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 comme essayer de d\u00e9barquer d’une voiture en mouvement : impossible.\u00a0 Le m\u00e9tier d’\u00e9crivain n’est plus ce qu’il \u00e9tait. Les gens modernes recherchent l’instantan\u00e9, ils veulent interagir, partager ce qu’ils aiment, influer sur le contenu : ils veulent avoir une relation avec ce qu’ils lisent. Alors quand Gary Montaigu gagne l’International Book Prize, il d\u00e9cide de changer le monde. Il va mettre son oeuvre sur l’\u00e9cran, dans une\u00a0t\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9alit\u00e9 : Un \u00e9crivain, un vrai.\u00a0Son roman deviendra un “roman participatif”. Tout le monde pourra le voir \u00e9crire, suivre la progression de son roman, commenter, partager, “aimer” sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux. Un genre d’Occupation double\u00a0litt\u00e9raire. Quelle id\u00e9e grandiose. Convaincu de faire avancer l’art, Gary ouvre sa maison aux cam\u00e9ramans 24 heures sur 24. Celle-ci devient un champ de bataille. Sa femme Ruth, qui g\u00e8re sa carri\u00e8re, commence \u00e0 s’habiller chic \u00e0 toute heure du jour. Ils essaient d’oublier les cam\u00e9ras et de mener leur vie habituelle. Les producteurs les convainquent d’ajouter au d\u00e9cor une jeune journaliste \u00e9motive pour cr\u00e9er une petite tension sexuelle. \u00c9videmment, sa femme devient un monstre possessif et jaloux. Le succ\u00e8s de son mari lui monte \u00e0 la t\u00eate, et elle est convaincue d’en \u00eatre la seule responsable. Son m\u00e9tier \u00e0 elle, c’est de g\u00e9rer la carri\u00e8re de son mari. Elle lit et commente ses textes par-dessus son \u00e9paule. Leur couple n’est plus qu’hypocrisie, ils se demandent s’ils se sont jamais vraiment aim\u00e9s. \u00c9videmment, Alana, la journaliste plac\u00e9e dans le casting, tombe amoureuse de l’\u00e9crivain. Quand Gary se pr\u00eate au jeu et l’embrasse, elle est convaincue qu’il l’aime. Elle est d\u00e9chir\u00e9e et vuln\u00e9rable. Et Gary devient fou. Envahi dans sa t\u00eate et dans son espace vital, il perd compl\u00e8tement sa raison d’\u00eatre. Il plonge dans un tourbillon d’id\u00e9es noires, se renferme, \u00e9crit de plus en plus mal, jusqu’\u00e0 toucher le fond. Il ne veut plus continuer la t\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9alit\u00e9, mais il est trapp\u00e9. Les producteurs lui courent apr\u00e8s, sa femme lui court apr\u00e8s, les t\u00e9l\u00e9spectateurs lui courent apr\u00e8s. Il ne voit pas d’autre solution que de courir lui aussi, dans la rue, en buvant du whisky, jusqu’\u00e0 ce qu’il tombe. Eh oui, il y avait\u00a0une morale dans ce livre si tragique. Et\u00a0elle r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e encore et encore par Gary Montaigu dans sa descente aux enfers. Il n’y a plus de place pour la pens\u00e9e profonde, les \u00e9crivains ne sont plus entendus, ils doivent s’adapter au public, les id\u00e9es nouvelles ne peuvent surgir, le monde est trop superficiel… Ce n’est pas \u00e7a qui m’a \u00e9mue. Mais la relation de couple tordue \u00e9tait horriblement\u00a0r\u00e9aliste, le sentiment d’\u00e9touffement\u00a0m’a pris \u00e0 la gorge, tout \u00e7a \u00e0 travers des phrases qui filaient \u00e0 100 km\/h. On n’a tout simplement pas le temps de respirer. Et c’est ce qui m’a tenue accroch\u00e9e, jusqu’\u00e0 la fin. Quant \u00e0 savoir si \u00e7a vaut la peine d’aller \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que du Plateau Mont-Royal pour le d\u00e9nicher… — Un \u00e9crivain, un vrai Pia Peterson Actes Sud 215
