During a distinguished evening, Sara Nichols meets Nick Rawdon, and two seemingly opposite worlds are irresistibly attracted. He, so rich, so mysterious, with his blade-sharp blue eyes, could have any woman, yet he feels drawn to the generous curves of this beautiful woman, and this unexpected feeling is only exacerbated by Sara's fiery temperament and titillating repartee. However, Sara's practicality holds her back: how could a poor painter like her consider starting a relationship with the owner of a bank, no matter how attractive he is? A game of cat and mouse ensues, where Nick tries by all means to attract Sara's favor and where passion alternates with doubt. Only an external factor will be able to conclude this story, and this role is played by Nick's sister who forces a new meeting between the two lovers. The two protagonists are at first furious about this deception, but they have to admit that they were only waiting for this. A romantic proposal of marriage ends the adventure in the best of all worlds, and they live happily ever after. At least, that's what we imagine.

At first full of prejudice, I finally understood how this kind of book could be so popular. Everything was there: the male and female ideal that fit all fantasies, a rather exciting love tension and a slight romantic suspense always present that keeps us from stopping... A real Walt Disney for adults. I read it in one sitting, and I must say that I was not bored for a second. Exasperated, yes, and often: the exaggeratedly naive side of the girl and the breathtaking unrealism of the story often made me roll my eyes, but all that doesn't matter, because after all, the novel is a kind of caricature of itself, and, in the end, that's what we're looking for. In short, everything is carefully calculated without any finesse, we know that, and it works.
