Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between)
I'm a big fan of Gilmore Girls : I watched the first 7 seasons three times. I love Lorelai, in my opinion she is the funniest and coolest person in the fictional world, and I thought, maybe a little naively, that the actress who played her must be as interesting as she is. So I was looking forward to reading this little autobiography. In the end, I could have done without it.
I don't know exactly what the purpose of this book was, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was a good way for the author and publisher to make some good money. They knew the fans would love anything coming from her. Well it didn't work with me.
I won't summarize, because the book seems to have no guidelines. A few chapters are devoted to Lauren Graham's youth and her entry into the world of show business; a few are life advice; in one chapter, she watches the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls and comments on them; in another, she explains how incredibly happy she was to play Lorelai again in the very bad eighth season (she obviously doesn't say it's bad; in fact, she avoids any general comment on the content), and otherwise, she recounts what seems to be going through her mind in the short time she had to write this book.
Reading this book, it seems like Lauren Graham has had a perfect life. Well, she was single for a while, but finally she's dating the handsome Peter Krause. She can be awkward sometimes, but that's what makes her so cute. Her parents are nice. She hasn't had that much trouble reaching her level of popularity, and all her projects have gone superbly. It's fishy.
And then I didn't laugh enough, when clearly I should have been laughing non-stop. It's full of jokes, and while it wasn't boring, it just wasn't... very funny.
In short, I learned almost nothing interesting about Lauren Graham's life, except that she is dating the handsome guy from Six feet under (I admit I was a bit excited to know that) and that she had an idyllic life. (Yeah yeah.) I didn't laugh much. And I couldn't wait to finish this and move on.
Don't waste your time like I did. Go and listen Gilmore Girls instead.
