Being in Balance

Wayne Dyer had impressed me a few years ago with "The Power of Intention", which had convinced me (for a little while) that I could take back control of my life, simply by trusting myself and letting go. Sick and desperate, I needed to be reconvinced a few days ago. This book was the only one by the author available on the shelves of the Plateau-Mont-Royal library.

Wayner Dyer is deeply religious. For him, the world has a meaning and was created by an entity of love and peace: he calls it God, but he is open to other names. He affirms that each living being, human, fish or tree, emits energy. It is the sum of all these energies that makes up our universe. If the world is chaotic, it is because these energies are negative. Fortunately, each of us can consciously make the choice to produce slower but more powerful energies of peace and love, and soothe ourselves and those around us. We can tune into all the elements in this way, as the cosmos, our planet, the seasons, water, wind, fire and earth naturally tune into each other. Wayne Dyer calls this "the concept of balance".

We can agree or disagree with the premise. Maybe the word "God" makes our hair stand on end, or our brains refuse to conceive that the world was created. But it's hard to deny that our behavior has an impact on our lives. If we're confident, calm and full of love, we'll probably be better off than if we're anxious, defeatist and full of hate... And it's hard to attract happiness if all we think about is unhappiness.

Wayne Dyer's nine principles give us a way to, in essence, calm down. Stop struggling, open up to love, trust our inner strength and life. The world is one of abundance, not scarcity. Our resources are unlimited. We are the ones with the big stick. The author tells us this firmly, but with great gentleness. He anticipates our resistance and understands it. But quietly, he leads us to peace. At least, it worked for me.

Here are, in my opinion, the most relevant chapters:

  • Chapter 2: Don't make your life a continuous race. "The key to coordinating your desire to be at peace with your need to succeed, perform well and earn a living is to admit that there is no such thing as stress. There are only people who entertain stressful thoughts."
  • Chapter 5: You are not what you eat; you are what you believe about what you eat. "Encourage yourself to believe that your body is capable of transforming any fuel it receives into happy, healthy cells: a radical idea, perhaps, since many people tend to hold the opposite view. Nevertheless, you decide to believe passionately even though this reality does not yet exist. You begin the process of looking for evidence to support your belief. You do this rather than give weight to opposing belief systems that produce unhealthy effects."
  • Chapter 6: You cannot discover the light by observing the darkness. "If you think shortage, that's what you'll create. If you talk to others about your shortages, you will only attract more of them. If you consider your shortages, you will only multiply them."

If I ever achieve this way of thinking, I feel like I will reach heaven on earth. I'll let you know how it goes.
